Marktplatz, 79312 Emmendingen
After Emmendingen received market rights in 1418, the market place square was established around the middle of the 15th century. Its modern appearance is influenced by the barock style of the Old Town Hall and the surrounding beautiful resident homes.
The Market Place has been the center of communal life since the late Middle Ages. Even today, the weekly market is held here on Tuesdays and Fridays. In earlier days annual fairs and animal markets took place here regularly.
In 1997 the Market Place was reconstructed to include a pedestrian area. In 2006, the Stock Fountain (18th century) was rebuilt and returned to its original site on the Market Square where it had been until 1897. After the Franco-German War of 1870/71, the war memorial took the fountain’s place on the Market Square. Today the war memorial can be found in the Old Cemetery.
