The foundation stone for Badischer Verlag was laid in January 1946: Between the publishing company H. Rombach & Co, the former managing director of the Frankfurter Zeitung Dr. Wendelin Hecht and the Verlagsbuchhandlung Herder & Co. GmbH, a preliminary agreement was concluded on January 9, 1946, with the aim of founding the Badischer Verlag in Freiburg. This company was to continue the "Freiburger Nachrichten" as a national newspaper with a Christian basis under the name "Badische Zeitung".
In 1950, when the licensing requirement had long since been lifted and the Basic Law guaranteed freedom of the press, the Freiburg publishers Poppen and Ortmann joined the shareholders of Badischer Verlag. They had published the "Freiburger Zeitung" until 1943.
Initially, the Badische Zeitung appeared twice a week; from May 1, 1950, the BZ was published four times, and finally six times a week from September 1951.
In 1961, the newspaper moved from the Herder building to the newly built press and publishing house of the Badische Zeitung on Basler Landstrasse.
In 1997, the companies Poppen & Ortmann and Rombach seize the opportunity to acquire the shares of the Herder-Knecht publishing house in the Badische Verlag. The newspaper production of both houses is merged in 1998 under the holding Badisches Pressehaus and since 01.02.2021 operates under the name BZ.medien GmbH & Co. KG.
Badischer Verlag GmbH & Co. KG publishes Baden's largest subscriber newspaper with its main product "Badische Zeitung". Approximately 470 employees ensure the daily publication of the newspaper. In the journalistic area, the editorial staff is supported by about 1,500 freelancers. Around 1,300 newspaper delivery staff ensure daily delivery.
The Badische Zeitung maintains a total of 8 offices in its circulation area.
