Turngasse, 78194 Immendingen

In the citizens' office in the town hall of the municipality of Immendingen you will find a wide range of information about our natural spectacle, the Danube seepage. As the main seepage points are located in the Immendingen district, the municipality has called itself "Immendingen an der Donauversinkung" for decades.

This occasionally leads to confusion among visitors. However, both terms can be used: Danube seepage and Danube sinking. This is because the water of the Danube seeps away in countless places throughout the region. However, it also sinks into large sinkholes in some places. These are mainly located near Immendingen. This is where they first became visible and noticeable in earlier centuries.

For this reason, we have jointly decided to use the term Danube seepage as a generic term for the overall geological process and our project in the region. An important part of the Danube seepage, however, are the prominent sinkholes that can be found along the Danube between Immendingen and Fridingen at the designated points.

Terminology

What is the correct name: Danube infiltration or Danube sinking?

As the Danube water both seeps away and sometimes sinks into large sinkholes, this is not so clear-cut. We refer to the overall phenomenon as Danube infiltration. The striking sinkholes are also part of the whole.
