The beginnings of the library go back to the year the university was founded in 1457. Its history is closely associated with the work of the Jesuit order in the 17th and 18th century. Late 18th century there was a reorganisation of the library management by the Austrian government, since the southern Baden area belonged to the barony dominion.
The new "UB" (Universitätsbibliothek) is not only a spectacular architectural exclamation mark, but also offers its users excellent service and an optimum learning and working environment. The complete reconstruction of the UB has lasted since 2009. The building was designed by the Degelo Architects office in Basel. As part of an innovative lighting, energy and climate concept, the house obtained a new façade of transparent skin of metal and glass. The architect Heinrich Degelo calls it a polished diamond.
