General information

The ruins of Hohengeroldseck Castle are Seelbach’s iconic landmark and have always generated a unique appeal. The mighty castle complex was built on its elevated perch in the 13th century. It served as the ancestral home and administrative centre of the barons of Hohengeroldseck. Still standing today is the so-called ‘alte Hus’, a palace with 26-metre-high walls and an interior length of 15 metres. Together with the porphyry rock on which the palace stands, its overall height is a towering 33 metres. All that remains of the so-called ‘neue Hus’ part of the castle are a few wall remnants.

A highly impressive feature of the castle was its water supply. The architects of the time managed to drive a 65-metre-deep well shaft into the hard bedrock and fortified the well house above it: the well house was only accessible from the highest courtyard and hence well protected from attack.

During its construction, the castle was besieged on two occasions. It was finally destroyed by the French in 1689 when it was completely gutted by fire. The rear parts of the castle can be reached via a spiral staircase. From the parapet you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the Schutter, Kinzig and Harmersbach valleys.

The task of maintaining the ruins of Hohengeroldseck Castle is carried out by a local society specifically founded for this very purpose in 1958. The Burgfest festival which takes place every year on the first Sunday in September is a particular highlight.

Our tip: The ruins can be easily reached on foot via the Geroldsecker Burgpfad path. On your way up, display boards that are suitable for children will inform you about castle life and various games will give you a better understanding. You will also discover a number of sculptures by chainsaw artists along the way.

The castle ruins can be visited year-round free of charge. A flyer with further information is available from the Culture & Tourist Information Office or at www.burgruine-hohengeroldseck.de.
