As early as the end of the 13th century, Freiburg had a Town Hall at the Franziskanerplatz where it set up a working space for the town clerk. The new office has been housed here since 1559. The elongated structure of the "Old Town Hall" with asymmetric arrangement of the axes can still be recognised in the core building of 1557/59, where firewalls with stepped gables penetrate through the roof. There are three door-ways on the ground floor. The main entrance, which dates back to 1558, has pilaster-supported Attica exemplifying the Renaissance shapes. There two lions are holding the coat of arms and the bordered escutcheon of Austria. Columns support the superstructure of the large arch that originally framed another entrance. A passage to Town Hall Yard was also located here. In 2002, the Renaissance Arch was restored and again frames the main entrance of the town hall.
