Saint John of Nepomuk bridge

General information

Even into the second half of the 17^th century, the only way of crossing the river here was by using the ford at the hill of the church and castle. It was not until the end of the 17^th Century that the first wooden bridge was erected over the river. When a coaching inn was established in Krozingen in 1742, this bridge was, however, no longer adequate for the traffic. Between 1753 and 1754 the Neumagen bridge was redeveloped to become a three-span trestle bridge.

To mark the construction of the new bridge, the reeves of Bad Krozingen, Josef Moser and of Offnading, Antonius Berne donated the statues of the Virgin Mary and of St John of Nepomuk. The best sculptor in Breisgau of the day, Johann Baptist Sellinger of Freiburg, was commissioned to make the statues.

In 1945 the bridge was blown up by retreating German soldiers. As though by a miracle, however, the Bad Krozingen building contractor was able to save the two valuable statues. These were erected again following the reconstruction of the bridge in 1954.

Detour: Statue of St John of Nepomuk in Hausen

The statue of St John of Nepomuk probably dates from the 18th century and is attributed to the Freiburg sculptor Andreas Hochsing. St John of Nepomuk is the patron saint of bridges and river crossings and is believed to protect people making the crossing. This statue formerly stood on the Möhlin bridge and is now located at the entrance into Hausen.
