"Brigach and Breg bringen die Donau zu Weg" (Brigach and Breg become the Danube) - at least that's what all schoolchildren used to learn. On the eastern outskirts of Donaueschingen, the two rivers join to form the Danube. This is where this most European of rivers begins its course through ten countries to the Black Sea - or through even more countries to the North Sea.
In 2022, the confluence of the Brigach and Breg rivers was redesigned as part of a major renaturation project by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The source of the Danube was restored to its natural state, significantly enhancing both the landscape and tourism. The Danube was even extended by 300 meters and the confluence moved closer to the centre of Donaueschingen.
This area can now be discovered in a variety of ways: The route via footbridges and paths with several viewing platforms allows a wide variety of perspectives on the confluence and the surrounding floodplain landscape.
The Danube cycle path leads directly past the confluence. An attractive stop-off point with bicycle parking spaces, an e-charging station and a drinking fountain has been created for this purpose.
