General information:

Did you know that a water tower can have two different functions? In Heide, it’s a fact.

Of course, the original task of Heide’s symbol was to make sure the city had clean drinking water. Providing the population with drinking water was a major problem until the end of the 19th century, particularly in the summer months. Both pumps and wells only gave surface water, which was also polluted with garbage. There was no truly functional sewer. The people were frequently afflicted with typhoid epidemics.

In 1901, after another typhoid epidemic, the city decided to create a central water supply. With the construction of the water tower (1902-1903) and the creation of a water pipeline system, this plight was ended. As of October 1903, the inhabitants of Heide enjoyed clean drinking water, and the danger of epidemics was past. The water tower continued its task until 1989, and was then closed down.

And the second function? The lovely historic water tower has turned into a coveted wedding location. In the lovely tower room, you can say the “I do” of a civil marriage – at airy heights, over the roofs of Heide, with a glorious panoramic view!
